You're right. Brendan Fraser did not start the movie until years after Inkspell was released. But he was a shoe in for the movie because of that dedication. Cornelia Funke had seen Brendan Fraser in several movies, but she didn't actually know him. Did you notice how Brendan Fraser looks like Mo? Tall, hair "dark as mole skin"? Just like Mo. After seeing him in the movies she liked him as a 'Mo' so she used him as inspiration. Also Mo has that incredible voice, Cornelia Funke loved Brendan Fraser's voice, thought it would be the kind of voice Mo should have, more inspiration. Funny thing was Brendan Fraser didn't know about Cornelia Funke using him as inspiration, and he heard about it from someone who had read the book and decided to meet up with Cornelia Funke. He was flattered at her using him for inspiration. They now have become good friends.
