I think you are talking to the wrong people. Talk to your girlfriend about it and see what she thinks of onyx. I personally thing a black stone is inappropriate, as black is usually ociated with dark and doomed things. You could however use her birthstone or a ruby. But to be honest, girls want diamonds so it looks like an engagement ring, not just a casual gift.
